The big question:

Can a startup seek to change the world while remaining grounded?

We stumbled into this business because we wanted to solve a problem. We were not pursuing a billion dollar valuation, nor were we trying to disrupt education. We simply wanted to help students feel at home in the world. We wanted to bridge cultural and socioeconomic gaps on high school and college campuses and enable institutions to deliver personalized support to their students.

Our BeliefS

What drives our work every day?

  • We believe that every student, regardless of background, means, or origin, should have access to a caring and supportive mentor.  This is what drives our Partnerships team to sign more school partners. This is what drives our Product team to develop world-class technology.

  • We believe that work should be both fun and meaningful. Don't get us wrong, we work incredibly hard. But we've discovered that working on something we enjoy for a reason we all believe in doesn't have to feel like "work".

Our Benefits

(Besides working with amazing schools and students, that is.)

  • Professional Development Budget
  • 360 Feedback Sessions
  • Health and Dental Benefits
  • Flexible Vacation and Remote Work Policy

Our Culture

We are always learning.

In fact, if there is one thing we value in a candidate, it is a voracious appetite for learning.

We have a strong feedback-driven culture where everyone has their voice heard. We expect team members to become proactive leaders, thriving in the uncertainty found in an entrepreneurial environment. If you join Shearwater, we want you to join the best learning environment you have ever experienced.

We value authentic and diverse perspectives. Our team has transitioned from Zimbabwe to Washington DC public schools, escaped a Syrian civil war, taught students internationally, and invested in learning second, third, fourth, and fifth languages.

Each week, a team member shares their experience with the rest of the team in a weekly mini-seminar. Previous topics include: History & Culture in the Middle East, Personal Finance, Alzheimer's Research, and Conducting Behavioral Interviews.

Some other things we care about:

  • Outcomes for our students and mentors

  • Building a hype-free, profitable business

  • Strategic and financial transparency

  • Creating a wonderful place to work
